New Training Programme in Elderly Care Helps Students with Special Needs Expand Career Pathways (Lianhe Zaobao, 11 Sep 2025)
Since completing the Eldercare Aide Training (EdCAT) programme in 2023, Liu Shan Wei has been working at PCF Sparkle Care, a senior care centre, for over two years. The three-month training course mainly covered cleaning, hygiene, and basic health check skills.
To broaden employment opportunities for students with special needs, Presbyterian Community Social Services (PCS) has launched the CareAbilities Programme, designed to help students with mild intellectual disabilities or autism acquire practical skills, while also injecting new manpower into the manpower-strapped eldercare sector.
This is the third pilot programme rolled out by PCS, following the Educator Aide Training (ECAT), and the Eldercare Aide Training (EdCAT) programmes.
During the two-year pilot, the programme will provide up to 12 months of full-time training and internship for participants. While receiving structured training, trainees will also work in community care institutions, learning practical skills that prepare them to take on relevant roles and meet operational needs.
