“A new program encourages more senior citizens to become volunteers”

A new program has been launched to encourage more seniors to volunteer to support their peers at the Active Aging Center (AAC).

With a goal of reaching 2,400 volunteers by 2028, the national program by the Agency for Integrated Care (AIC), named Silver Guardian, hopes to develop a pool of volunteers who support AAC as the centers expand their role and activities in the community.

The Silver Guardian program was launched by the Minister of Health, Mr Ong Ye Kung, on 5 April at the Presbyterian Community Services Esther AAC on Strathmore Avenue near Queenstown.

Mr. Ong said many retired senior citizens experience a “sense of loss”.

“Our ability to contribute to society and the people around us gives us a purpose and self-worth, and is closely related to a person’s well-being.
