“Plan to attract 2,400 volunteers to vibrant aging centers” (Tamil Murasu – 5 Apr 2024)

A new program by the Agency for Integrated Care aims to select 2,400 senior citizens and train them as volunteers by 2028.

The program is named The Silver Guardians. The seniors trained here help other seniors by befriending them and helping them organize activities at active ageing centres.

Speaking about this, Minister of Health Ong Yee Kong explained that this is the fourth aspect of the national program ‘AgeWell SG’ to encourage the elderly to live healthily and vibrantly in the community. Minister Ong said that knowing that he can contribute to the society can give a person a sense of purpose and self-esteem.

“Through philanthropy, seniors can make a meaningful impact on the lives of others around them. Also, they can remain vibrant, healthy and connected to the community,” said Mr Ong while launching the project at the Presbyterian Community Services’ Esther Active Ageing Centre.
